What to expect
Initial contact with new patients is via phone. A brief (about 15 minutes) overview of your problem or difficulty allows me to begin thinking about my approach; and, we also address immediate questions you may have, review session fees, and find a time to meet in person.
The first session is an opportunity for you to get a sense of how I work and how we might work together, a fit that we establish in the initial weeks of work together and which we reassess over time. I look at your history, with special attention to what has worked for you, as well as what hasn't been working and why. Sessions are each typically 50 minutes in length, but the first session may take 60-75 minutes depending on the nature of your concerns. Subsequent sessions are scheduled on a once or twice weekly basis, at regularly recurring times.
Fees and insurance
I'm currently contracted as an in-network provider with Aetna, and the Duke student medical insurance plan. As such, as of January 1, 2025 (when the NC state health plan transitions to Aetna), I'm an in-network provider for state health plan beneficiaries and their families, most Duke and UNC employees and their families, and some Duke and UNC students. As an in-network provider, you can count on me to bill your insurance, and your out of pocket cost will depend on the details of your plan.
Otherwise, I am an out-of-network provider. For current fees, please contact me.
Medicare beneficiaries please note: I have opted out of Medicare.
Also please note: I often work with individuals who have a family member paying for treatment or processing the insurance reimbursement for it (college-aged young adults and married individuals being the most common examples). In these situations, I do still expect to deal directly with you in the billing process.

Urgent matters?
If you are an established patient with an urgent concern, please phone me and listen carefully to my recorded greeting; I check messages during regular business hours; if needed, there are instructions on how to reach me (or a covering colleague) at any time.
